SEO for plumbers comes down to one goal: when someone in your area has a leaking pipe, a cold boiler or a blocked drain, your name is one of the first they see on Google. This guide covers what that takes for a small plumbing firm in Luton, Bedford or anywhere in the UK, which jobs are worth targeting, and what you can do yourself before you pay anyone.
Why SEO for plumbers is different from SEO for most businesses
Most plumbing searches are urgent and local. Nobody compares ten websites over a cup of tea when water is coming through the ceiling. They search, tap the first plumber who looks trustworthy and nearby, and ring. That means two parts of Google matter more to you than anything else: the map results (your Google Business Profile) and the handful of ordinary results underneath.
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change where a customer is standing, so the work goes into the other two: making it obvious what you do and where, and building the reviews and mentions that show you are a real, established business.
What people in your area actually search for
Here are some monthly UK search volumes from Semrush (October 2026) for plumbing searches around Luton and Bedford:
| Search | Searches per month |
|---|---|
| plumber luton | 260 |
| emergency plumber luton | 170 |
| boiler service luton | 170 |
| boiler repair luton | 90 |
| blocked drain luton | 50 |
| plumber bedford | 320 |
Two things stand out. First, the service searches (emergency, boiler service, boiler repair) add up to more than the plain “plumber luton” search. Second, those service searches tend to be less competitive. A plumber with one generic homepage is invisible for most of them. A plumber with a clear page for each main service has a chance at all of them.
Step 1: get your Google Business Profile right
For a plumber, the Business Profile is often worth more than the website, because the map pack sits above the normal results on a phone. The basics:
- Choose “Plumber” as your primary category, then add secondary categories only for work you really do, such as boiler repair or drainage.
- Most plumbers work at the customer’s address, so set yourself up as a service area business and list the towns you cover rather than showing a home address.
- Use your real trading name. Adding “Best Emergency Plumber Luton” to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
- Add photos of real jobs: a finished bathroom, a new boiler install, your van. Stock photos do nothing for trust.
- Keep your hours accurate. If you answer the phone at 2am, say so. If you do not, do not claim 24 hours.
We go through the full setup in our guide to Google Business Profile for Luton trades.
Step 2: give each main service its own page
Look at the table again. Someone searching “boiler service luton” wants a page about boiler servicing, not a homepage that mentions boilers once in a list. Build a page for each service that brings in good work, for example:
- Emergency plumbing: what counts as an emergency, your call-out hours, the areas you reach and how quickly you can usually get there.
- Boiler servicing and repairs: the makes you work on and what a service includes.
- Bathroom fitting: real photos and what a typical project involves.
- Leaks and blocked drains, if that is work you want more of.
Each page should name the towns you cover in normal sentences, have a phone number that is tappable on a mobile, and answer the questions customers ask you on the phone every week. Those questions make good page content because they are exactly what people type into Google.
Step 3: show proof that you are qualified
Trust decides who gets the call. If you do any gas work, the law requires you to be on the Gas Safe Register, and customers can check an engineer’s registration. Put your registration number on your boiler pages and your footer. Do the same for any other scheme you genuinely belong to. Never claim a membership or accreditation you do not hold; it is the fastest way to lose a customer and it can land you in trouble.
Your company details matter too. Our study of 130 Luton and Bedford trade websites looked at how many showed the basic business details customers and Google look for.
Step 4: build reviews steadily
Google says the number of reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. The plumbers who build them fastest ask at the right moment: straight after a job has gone well, with a short link sent by text. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and specific way. Never buy reviews or write them for yourself. Since April 2025, submitting or commissioning fake reviews has been a banned practice under UK consumer law.
Step 5: make the site fast and easy to use on a phone
Your customer is probably standing in a wet kitchen holding a phone. If your site takes ages to load, hides the number at the bottom or asks for a long form, they go back and ring the next plumber. Put the phone number at the top of every page, keep forms short, and check the site on your own phone over mobile data, not office Wi-Fi.
How long does SEO take for a plumber?
Profile fixes can show up in the map results fairly quickly. New service pages usually take longer, often a few months, and competitive towns take longer than small ones. We explain why in how long SEO takes. Anyone who promises you first place on Google by next week is guessing; Google itself says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
Plumbers in Luton, Dunstable and Bedford
The plumbing searches we see around Luton are heavily local and often urgent: a boiler repair in Luton, a leak in Dunstable, an emergency plumber in Houghton Regis. Being in the map results for those searches matters more than ranking for anything general. That comes from a verified Google profile, reviews that mention the work, and a page for each town you cover.
If you hold Gas Safe registration, show your number and make sure it matches the register. Customers in the area do check.
PaveLocal, our driveway site for Milton Keynes and the surrounding towns, uses the same approach for another home-improvement trade: one page per service, one per town, and cost guides that answer the questions people search before they call.
What you can do this week
- Search for your main service and town on your phone and note who appears above you.
- Check your Business Profile category, service areas and hours.
- Ask your last five happy customers for a review by text.
- Write down the three jobs you most want more of. Those are your first three service pages.
